Understand the Issues

First of all, it’s important to learn about the issues faced by many people in our communities.

  • There are more than 500,000 homeless people in the U.S., half of which are over the age of 50.

  • There are countless homeless pets in the U.S., and 77% of pets in underserved communities have never been to the veterinarian.

  • Many seniors face a wide variety of issues related to their physical, mental, and emotional health each day.

Put Boots on the Ground

Once you begin to learn about the struggles of your fellow community members, it’s time to get out there and make a difference!

  • The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation has a number of volunteer opportunities available including administrative work and outdoor projects.

  • Organizing a food drive and donating harvest from your garden are a couple of ways to help address the hunger problem in your area.

  • You could also offer to tutor students in your community.

  • You can benefit the animals in your community by bringing in strays, fostering pets, and calling animal control if you see a homeless pet.

  • Coaching a youth sports team is another idea for investing in young people.

  • And you could even start your own charity!

Put Your Money to Work

Donations come in many forms! Think about how your money can help.

  • When you get a call from an organization asking for money, don’t always just hang up and forget about it; research the organization and consider saying yes.

  • And you know those opportunities at the checkout counter to donate to certain charities? Do that, too.
