Internship Program at AHLF
Trails and Conservation Internship
Trails and Conservation interns support the restoration and conservation of the trails that surround the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, while also contributing to projects that improve our watershed and community. This experience will provide participants with a stronger understanding of the ongoing work required to maintain local trails, restore native habitats, and protect the health of a coastal watershed.
Job duties may include:
- Trail monitoring and restoration
- Algerian Sea Lavender Removal Project
- Oyster Wattle creation
- Organic waste diversion
- Native plant care & watering
Discovery Campus Internship
Campus interns will support the activities of our Discover Campus; a collection of hands-on exhibits, gardens, and live animal ambassadors, allowing visitors to “taste nature." This experience will provide participants with a stronger understanding of the ongoing work required to engage the community in environmental education, and how to support the daily operations of a vibrant nature center.
Job duties may include:
- Animal handling and care
- Guest interaction and engagement
- Help open/close the campus
- Maintain, enhance, and create exhibits
- Create promotional materials and signage
Education Internship
Education interns support our Academy for Environmental Stewardship Program (fall, winter, spring), Discovery Summer Camp (summer only), and more. Our educational programs feature hands-on learning through themed lessons, crafts, and animal interactions, that teach students about our environment and human interaction with nature.
Job duties may include:
- Support lead educator
- Assist with outdoor classroom and handwashing station set-up /tear down
- Guide students and teachers off the bus
- Prepare activity materials as needed
- Assist students through activities and crafts
- Ensure students remain engaged, follow directions, and stay with their groups
Internships may be eligible for academic credit, pending approval of associated schools and universities. Duration and weekly hours will be determined in coordination with the supervising department.
All interns age 18 and older are required to complete a background check, ($20) paid for by the potential intern, prior to start.
